This detailed raised relief trail map of Great Smoky Mountains National Park uses our precision thermoform molding process to realistically reproduce the park's rugged terrain at a scale of 1:180,000. The map's 20" x 11" image area covers the park's more than 500,000 acres spanning North Carolina and Tennessee. A subtle elevation color ramp image enhances the changes in elevation while detailed annotations identify terrain features, trails (including the Appalachian Trail), shelters, campsites, and ranger stations, as well as rivers, streams, and lakes.

How are these three dimensional raised relief maps made?

Each raised relief map starts as a map printed on a flat study sheet of vinyl. It is carefully registered over a 3D model that is made from USGS digital elevation model data. The vinyl is heated to make it pliable and a vacuum is created to form the map over the model. Take a look at the process below.
