This National Parks and Trails version ofåÊthe 3D US map is a beautiful and accurate reference for identifying not only our national parks and trails, but also battlefields, monuments, lakeshores, seashores, and marine sanctuaries. Unlike other US maps available today, this one models both the topography and the bathymetry of the contiguous 48 United States and surrounding waters.

How are these three dimensional raised relief maps made?

Each raised relief map starts as a map printed on a flat study sheet of vinyl. It is carefully registered over a 3D model that is made from USGS digital elevation model data. The vinyl is heated to make it pliable and a vacuum is created to form the map over the model. Take a look at the process below.
